Once Upon A Dream...

I went this evening to see the TUTS production When You Wish. TUTS started at Miller Outdoor Theater and that is in fact how they got their name, Theater Under the Stars. Every summer they put on a free show at the theater and have for 41 years. When You Wish was a Disney music revue.

I'm a Disney girl. I'm sure it has played a part in my passion for musicals. As an only child I had to entertain myself growing up and I spent a lot of time listening to Disney soundtracks on my record player. This evening as I was listening to these songs and lyrics I decided that it must have also played a part in the hopeless romantic that I am. I know most everyone will say that life is not like a Disney movie. The prince doesn't fall in love with you at first glance, ride in and rescue you and you don't live happily ever after. I know that logically, but my heart does occasionally long for that loving glance and that happily ever after (ok fine, more than occasionally).

The show had bits and pieces of 67 different songs. At one point as I was writing this blog post in my head I was going to list each one, but you are lucky and I have changed my mind on that point. The songs fell into some definite categories starting with songs I had never heard of before (Minnie's Yoo-Hoo, Lavender Blue, The Tiki Tiki Tiki Room) and songs that I knew about peripherally but are from movies that I don't really care about (Dumbo, Pocahontas, Tarzan, The Hunchback of Notre Dame).

After that the songs fall into varying degrees on the scale from like on some days (Part Of Your World, A Whole New World, Reflection), to ones that are always on my good list (Heigh Ho, Under the Sea, Prince Ali, Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious, Hakuna Mata, Be Our Guest, Let's Go Fly A Kite, I could go on and on...) to ones that are off the charts because they are so utterly sappy, just like me. In that category these are the ones that stood out to me tonight. The ones that always make me tear up, or wish for that Prince Charming (notice they are all old school...).

Bella Notte - Always makes me tear up, Always.
So This is Love - Cinderella has a very special place in my heart. It was the record that I remember more than any other spinning on that record player as a child. And this is just a pretty song.
A Dream Is A Wish Your Heart Makes - Cinderella, see above.
Once Upon A Dream - I adore this song. It just so happened the year that I joined the music fraternity in college they decided to have a Disney theme for their pledge night. It was meant to be I guess. We had to give a recital as part of our pledge activities and we decided to keep the theme going and do Disney songs. I sang Once Upon A Dream. I love it.
I'm Wishing/One Song - I hadn't heard this in ages, but I'm glad I rediscovered it this evening. The lyrics to I'm Wishing are so wistful and are things I dream about when I'm in that wishing, daydreaming mood and One Song is just a lovely song.

And so we don't end on a completely sappy note, the best number was the one built around Everybody Wants To Be A Cat (ignore the stereotyped Siamese from 50 years ago and the weird harp thing in the middle). That song is so jazzy and so much fun and it lent itself very well to a broadway style big dance number. Also great was He's A Tramp. How can you not love that song!
