Seven Things About Me

I've been tagged by Sir Jeff to tell you seven things you may not know about me.  Notice that it didn't say that they were interesting things!  Just things.

1.) The only alcohol I drink is champagne.  Period.  It isn't some righteous stand on the evils of drinking.  I just don't like the taste of it at all.  I remember when I was a child and my grandparents took a trip to Europe.  They were passing around some fancy chocolate they had brought back with them.  I took one bite of and made the face.  The same face I make today.  I try every once in a while, thinking that maybe I have developed a taste, but I haven't.  You don't realize how much our society revolves around drinking unless you don't do it.

2.)  I don't drink coffee.  I don't like the taste of coffee even with milk and sugar.  I have a feeling that if I kept trying I could develop a taste for it, but why bother?  It is a big addiction for people who can't seem to start their day without their cup of coffee and it seems silly to try to encourage that type of addiction.  The funny part is that I love the smell of coffee and I love hanging out in coffee shops.  I'm just limited to hot chocolate and chai latte.

3.) I leave piles of shoes around my apartment.  I don't know why I do this and I don't notice it until a few days have passed and the pile has formed.  I like to be barefoot when I am at home so I take my shoes off as soon as I get home.  I have given myself a stern talking to about walking the few extra feet to my bedroom and leaving the shoes in my closet, yet I still create shoe mountain.  Bad, very strange habit.

4.) I'm half Panamanian and I speak no Spanish.  My mother is white and she joined the peace corps and went to Panama where she met my father.  When they divorced she came back to the states with me.  She is white and speaks Spanish, I am half hispanic and I do not.  I really should speak Spanish especially since I work in a predominantly hispanic school, but I just haven't learned it.

5.) I have a birthmark on my right hand.  Thank goodness for that birthmark because it is the only way I can quickly tell left from right.  I probably do know my left from my right, but I always have the mark to guide me so I check it out of habit before I'm about to give instructions that involve directions.

6.) I love baked goods.  When I saw "I love cake" on Jeff's list I immediately knew that I was going to have to put that on my list too.  But it isn't just cake, it's baked goods.  When people say they like sweets sometimes they mean they like candy and while I won't pass up a candy bar, they aren't as high on my list.  Even further down my list is hard candy like Jolly Ranchers. Way at the top is cake, cookies and sweet breads like coffee cakes and turnovers.  They are my Achilles heel.  I absolutely can not turn them down.  My favorite cake is yellow cake with chocolate frosting and my favorite cookie is oatmeal chocolate chip.

7.) I am a television addict.  I've been thinking about this in relation to the type of books I enjoy reading.  I think the reason I like TV (and certain books) is that I get to know the characters and then see them go through different scenarios.  There is an element that is comforting and familiar in their reactions to the events around them.  Movies just don't have the same appeal for me.  I don't go to the theater very much.  I can just catch up with it on Netflix and as a bonus not have to put up with inconsiderate people.  But I watch TV all the time.  Or I should say that the TV is on all the time, even just as background noise.  I used to draw up watching schedules for the new TV season so I could make sure I caught everything new that I wanted to try.  The DVR has changed that obsessive aspect thank goodness, but it is full to the brim with recordings.  I can't imagine what it would be like if I actually had a TiVO.

So there you go.  Seven things about me.  Now I'm supposed to tag seven people.  This is one of the aspects I hate about memes, because a lot of people don't like being tagged.  So I will say as I always do, feel free to do it or feel free to ignore it.  It won't bother me either way.  At the very least hopefully you will get some blog traffic (haha... you know a whole 1 or 2 new visitors).
