I've been looking back at my blog archives for entries I wrote the last time I moved. Many of them were to the effect of how much I hate packing and feeling like it will never end. I worked for weeks to get the apartment ready last time. Today was the first day I packed a box and I have 13 days until I get my keys and 16 days until the movers come. I may be delusional right now, but I don't think it is going to be so bad this time around.
Part of the reason I don't think it will be so bad is because I did a lot, and I mean A LOT, of sorting, organizing and purging when I moved into this apartment four years ago. I rethought how every single thing was organized and where everything went. I threw tons of stuff away, bought new storage containers for other stuff and took even more containers up to the family farm for storage. It was a massive amount of work, but it may just be my salvation this time. I have also worked hard not to accumulate too much since then. I have been of the mindset that I just didn't have a place to store things and I've tried to cut down on the accumulation of "stuff."
This weekend's chore was to pack up my desk/printer area and to empty out my outdoor storage closet. I pulled each box out of storage, checked to see what was in it, purged a little bit from a few of them, taped them up and labeled them with their destination. Most everything that was in storage was already sorted and packed into plastic containers so it was really not so bad except that I have severely aggravated my allergies. Tomorrow I'm going to pick up some smaller boxes to pack my camera equipment in and work a little more on the outdoor containers. I'm about 90% done with that task, so after that I can move on to the next one on my list which is the bedroom and bedroom closet.
I have dreams of being finished early with packing. We'll see.
