The Monkees. Davy Jones. Where do I start. I started watching them during their '80s revival on MTV. I'm not sure what it was about the Monkees (their music, their goofy humor, the pure joy) but I fell in love immediately. I taped all the shows I could off the TV and watched them over and over and over again. I bought Monkees cassette tapes and read books on the forming of the group in the '60s. I loved them. They were an escape for me. I could forget about the emotional ups and downs of high school and just lose myself in the silliness.
I will admit that Davy was not my favorite. That was a tie between Micky and Mike. Davy was the heartthrob and one of the "pretty people" something I could not relate to (still don't.... more attracted to smart people with dorky humor like Micky and Mike than the pretty people.) Even though he wasn't my favorite of the four he was pretty high up on my list of awesome people because he was a Monkee and I loved them all.
I'm genuinely sad tonight at his passing. 66 is too young to go. It also makes me feel my age as more and more of the entertainment people who pass away aren't just random names that I heard once or twice but people who had a real impact on my life.
